What is an ECCN?

Certain goods exported from the U.S. may fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and require an Export Control Classification Number.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) within the U.S. Department of Commerce has jurisdiction over the export of certain items (i.e. commodities, technology, software) that have or may have, military, terrorist, or proliferation applications and an export license may be required.

An ECCN (Export Control Classification Number) is an alphanumeric designation (e.g., 1A984or 4A001) for items that are listed on the Commerce Control List (CCL) to identify such items for export control purposes.
